A relaxing day poolside or at the beach is a summer treat we look forward to all year long. There are many items and accessories that can help you enjoy your day in the sun, but the costs can rise faster than the temperature! These 8 essential tips can help you be your beach best, without spending a bundle.

  • Bargain beach accessories. For your day at the beach or poolside you need beach chairs, a cooler, extra towels and a large sturdy beach bag to carry it all. A colourful beach umbrella provides much needed shade when you’ve soaked up too many rays. See the Walmart flyer on Flyerland.ca for the best bargains on beach basics
  • Slather on the sunscreen. One of the most important beach essentials is sunscreen. The higher the SPF (sun protection factor) the better, especially if you’re fair-skinned. Be sure to reapply every two to three hours and after swimming, even if the label says it’s water-resistant. Keep an eye on the Shopper’s Drug Mart, London Drugs and Rexall flyers for great deals on sun protection.
  • Bring your best beach fashions. Besides your flirtiest bikini or sophisticated swimsuit, be sure to pack a chic cover-up, floppy sun hat and flip-flops—visit Flyerland.ca and check out the Sears flyer for summer sales. Packing a change of clothes including an extra pair of comfy shoes is a good idea in case yours get wet.
  • Blistering beach reads. The season’s hottest bestsellers are perfect light reading for sizzling summer days—check out Indigo’s recommended summer beach reads online and take advantage of spectacular summer savings. If you’re out for the day with your best gal pals, ask everyone to bring a different magazine and swap throughout the day.
  • Soundtrack to your summer. There are songs that bring back wonderful memories of summers gone by. You can find online lists of the most popular summertime tunes or pick your favourites and load up your iPod.
  • Keep valuables safe. A fanny pack or belt bag is handy for carrying keys, money and ID so you don’t have to bring your purse or leave it in the car.
  • Save on snacks. Avoid the high prices at the refreshment stand by bringing snacks or a picnic lunch. Try refrigerating or freezing sandwiches to keep them fresher—they’ll thaw by the time you’re ready for lunch. Stock up at Loblaws—you’ll find the latest flyer deals at Flyerland.ca. And be sure to bring plenty of water to stay hydrated in the hot sun.
  • Soothe a sunburn. If you get a bit too much sun and find yourself with a burn, be sure to have aloe vera on hand to cool and soothe the skin.
